If this happens the problem is with the remote. If it opens from the inside button the problem isnt the door locks did this on my mk4 tdi i just changed it to unlock all doors with 1 press of tje button. Seems to be a common problem. My mk4 wont lock.

Here is a vid i made on fixing vw golf mk4 door locking mechanisms or rather replacing them. Locks work from the switch but not the remote. The battery is likely dead and needs to be replaced but the remote s may also need to be reprogrammed to work.
